Having Tokyo selected as the city to host the 2020 Olympics reminds me of 2002 in a way when Japan and Korea both hosted the World Cup together (I was living in a goshiwon and studying Korean in Seoul at the time). Though the timing and location is coincidental, having two Olympic games two years apart in two locations just 1000 km apart makes for an interesting dynamic. IOC officials in Korea before and during the 2018 Olympics for example could easily hop on a flight to Japan next door to keep an eye on construction and other preparations for the games just two years down the road. To show just how close these two are compared to the other upcoming locations, see this map.
