Ted.com translation stats for May 2010

Saturday, May 08, 2010

Time for another update to Ted.com translation stats over the past weeks. The site itself had a large influx of videos last month, or perhaps it just felt like it due to the attention some of them received. Sam Harris' talk on deriving absolute morality from science for example.

Esperanto added a new translation in March (James Cameron as a boy; still haven't watched that one), and I just noticed that Norwegian is divided up into two strange categories: Norwegian and Norwegian (bokmål).

Now to the language stats. Nothing too huge to mention this time, except that Dutch has barely produced anything this time compared to last (just 11 compared to about four times that last update), Chinese is now equal with Spanish for number of translations if you include simplified and traditional, Hebrew has really picked up speed, so has Korean, and Portuguese is also doing very good with almost the same number of videos as Spanish and Chinese (nearing 600). Also, Vietnamese was a new entry to the list of top languages last time and has continued to do well so it's probably here to stay.

Arabic: 303 --> 382 (+79)
Bulgarian: 448 --> 514 (+66)
Chinese (both traditional and simplified): 491 --> 629 (+138)
