You may remember this post from April with pictures of Iran in the 1970s before the Islamic Revolution, pictures that almost nobody would guess had come from Iran given the prevalence of miniskirts and veil-less hair. In a similar vein, you can also find images of Afghanistan before the Soviet invasion with people looking something like this.
Quick summary of the history after that: the Soviets invaded, the West provided the resistance with military aid, the Soviets were defeated, the West lost interest, Afghanistan had a civil war, arch-conservatives won, Afghanistan went back into the stone ages.
A recovery from this is the theme of Saad Mohseni's new movie and his interview on the Daily Show today. Definitely watch it if you're at all interested in the area (and if your mother tongue is English, chances are your country has troops in the country).
