Ted.com translation stats for July 2010

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

It's been ten weeks since I took a look at the translation stats for Ted.com, so let's see if anything notable has happened since then. The current numbers for the largest languages now look like this:

This time I have changed the statistics a bit as the total number of talks is only 739, but this time adding up two types of Portuguese and two types of Chinese has resulted in some 800+ talks which is an unfair advantage. Also, it makes no sense with Portuguese now that there is a common orthographic standard. So Chinese will now only include simplified, and Portuguese will only include Brazilian Portuguese.

There aren't any real surprises this time around though, except that Russian and Vietnamese have picked up speed a bit, and Spanish is nearing saturation with only a few dozen left to do. Bulgarian continues to do an absolutely phenomenal job, not just for a language of its size but also a phenomenal job for a language of any size. And even the complete list doesn't hold any surprises, with Bislama remaining at just one, Scandinavian languages are still low, Esperanto has a bit over a dozen, etc.
