Zhangjiajie denies renaming mountain after Avatar

Friday, January 29, 2010

Looks like people in China weren't happy with the idea of renaming a mountain in Zhangjiajie after avatar and the city is now denying that they renamed the mountain. Pretty tough to deny though when the city's website itself says that the mountain was renamed.

They key word here is 更名 (rename). The first sentence says "where is the magnificent "Hallelujah Mountain" in the international blockbuster Avatar? In Zhangjiajie. This January 25, Zhangjiajie officially renamed (正式被更名) "heaven and earth column" to "Hallelujah Mountain", and on the same day hundreds of locals and tourists from abroad witnessed the name change ceremony (更名仪式).

How disappointing.

I certainly was surprised by the original news, given the traditional Chinese apathy for anything foreign.
