Quotes from debate between Angela Merkel and Frank-Walter Steinmeier

Monday, September 14, 2009

Spiegel.de has some nice quotes from today's (yesterday's) debate between Angela Merkel and Frank-Walter Steinmeier that are great for those studying German as the context for the quote is given just below. I'm also woefully uninformed about German internal politics so it's time for me to read them over too.

This one from Steinmeier:

"Das zerrt an den Nerven der Gesellschaft."

(That tears at the nerves of society)

is about giving millions in severance bonuses to failed bank managers while at the same time firing a cashier (a bank cashier?) for embezzling 1.3 euros.

Angela Merkel has a similar quote:

"Sechs Monate Arbeit und für fünf Jahre Gehalt, das halte ich für unanständig."

(Six months of work and for five years' salary - I find that to be indecent)

Below it says it's about Karl-Gerhard Eick from Arcandor.

A poll on who won yesterday's debate can be seen here in German, and a video in English from BBC on the debate can be seen here.
