5 August 2009 (14 Mordad 1288): Ahmadinejad flies in by helicopter to take the oath of office, more protests

Wednesday, August 05, 2009

The streets were full of protesters and Ahmadinejad had to fly in by helicopter to take the oath of office today. Many will remember his previous preference for making his way through crowds bit by bit and shaking hands, but he's since lost that and now has to stay well away from any non-pre-arranged crowds.

The Guardian's liveblogging page is a good place today to keep track of what's going on at the moment.

An article from Deutsche Welle also details some of the tensions between Sweden and other EU nations (especially Germany) for Sweden's sending of its ambassador to the swearing-in.

An article from the Economist today: It's Far From Over.

Update later on: as always, Tehran Bureau has the most detailed writeup.
