12 August 2009: Portuguese Wikipedia hits 500,000 articles

Saturday, August 15, 2009

Unlike the Spanish Wikipedia they decided to celebrate the milestone with a special logo that you can see on the right. There are eight flags there, and starting from the very top and working clockwise they are: São Tomé and Príncipe, Angola, Brazil, Mozambique, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Portugal, and Cape Verde. Macau and Equatorial Guinea technically have Portuguese as official languages too but it isn't nearly as prevalent there as in the other eight countries which is probably the reason why they were left off.

I've found three articles in Portuguese on the milestone. This one says that the Portuguese Wikipedia is viewed 280,000 times per hour. The other two articles are here and here.
