Kepler and the search for exoplanets (even from London)

Thursday, July 09, 2009

Here's a video uploaded last week on Kepler and the search for exoplanets overall, a nice reminder that Kepler is a few months into its primary mission and will probably be able to start announcing planetary discoveries soon (though the first ones should be hot Jupiters, extremely close to their host star).

The best part about the video is 1) the fact that exoplanet observation can be carried out even in cities as large as London, and 2) the age of the astronomers featured here. Having a group of students at Mill Hill Observatory in London being able to contribute to what we know about exoplanets means that once we find other Earths and interest in other planets explodes, it will be very easy for other nations to contribute to what we know about them.
