Loving Astro Mike

Friday, May 22, 2009

I'm loving these tweets from Astro Mike (Mike Massimino), the astronaut currently in the Space Shuttle on the mission that has repaired the Hubble Space Telescope. I wrote before that perhaps one of the reasons why we've yet to become a spacefaring race is that most people feel almost no attachment to space and the astronauts that go there and back, because who they are and what they no is largely unknown.

But these messages sent by Massimino are amazing, because they're capable of reaching even those with the shortest attention spans, and are simply about what he and the others are up to, and what it feels like to be up in space. A few examples:

-Getting a call from the President
-Seeing the Orion Nebula
-Going over Australia at night
-It's beautiful up here
-The stars at night in space compared to on Earth
-Number of sunrises and sunsets seen per day
-How it feels to sleep in space
-Eating chocolate

And finally, my favourite:

From orbit: Hard to sleep last night after my spacewalk, images of the work and the views still vivid in my mind.
Total number of people following as of now: 329,569.

I think you're really on to something with this. Astro Mike is the reason why I tuned in to watch the Atlantis shuttle launch. It's the first time I've ever intentionally watched a launch or followed a space mission.
