The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (Prens Caspian) teaser with Turkish subtitles

Thursday, November 20, 2008

This turned out to be a more interesting post than I thought. I found a teaser for Prince Caspian with Turkish subtitles and so decided to write them out with a bit of explanation for those learning the language, but in the middle it turned out that some of the translations were...well, wrong. That's okay; everybody makes mistakes sometimes and perhaps the video was just an exercise in learning English or just to get the word out about a good movie. In any case, it makes an interesting example for those of us learning Turkish as well. I've made an effort to provide my own translations next to the ones that were wrong, but use those at your peril. Well, except one which is definitely correct because I found it somewhere else after coming up with it.

Here's the video:

And the script plus my notes:

English Türkçe
Literal Turkish meaning or notes
This summer
Bu yaz

The time has come
Vakit geldi
Time came
To journey back...
Yolculuk yeniden başlıyor
Journey begins anew
To Narnia
Narnia'ya

One year later for them
Onlar için bir yıl
One year for them
I don't remember any ruins in Narnia.
Narnia'da böyle yıkıntılar hatırlamıyorum
I don't remember these kinds of ruins in Narnia
I wonder who lived here.
Burda yaşamak isterdim.
Translation wrong - means "I wanted to live here". Note burda = burada. I might translate this as "burda kim yaşadı acaba?"
I think we did.
Sanırım biz yaşadık.

1300 years for Narnia
Narnia için bin üçyüz yıl

I think it's time we found out what went on here.
Sanırım burda neler olduğunu bulma zamanı geldi

Who are you?
Kimsin sen?

I am Prince Caspian.
Ben Prens Caspian'ım.

A new age has begun
Yeni bir çağ başladı

You may find Narnia a more savage place than you remember.
....!
Nothing here! My rough translation would be something like "Narnia artık sizin hatırladığınız yumuşak bir yer değil" <-- Narnia's not the soft place you remember.
This May
bu mayıs

The fate of all
hepsinin kaderi

lies with the destiny of one
birinin kaderinin yalanlarıyla
Translation wrong! Lit. means "with the lies of the destiny of one". I might translate this as "birinin kaderine güveniyor".
All that you know is about to change.
değişimle ilgili bilmeniz gereken şey
Translation wrong! Lit. means "what you need to know about change". I would translate this as "bildiğiniz her şey değişecek"...and oh! Doing a search on Google for that exact sentence finds a page on Narnia. Niiiice.
