In a planet-circling crisis that began with junk mortgages in California, a financial meltdown in Iceland is being felt in 2,600 kilometres away in Newfoundland.

Visitors from Iceland have come to St. John's on special flights every year for a decade to buy Christmas gifts and stock up on supplies. Not this year.

"The tour company had been exchanging e-mails and it was looking doubtful and they were concerned with the situation, but we had no idea they would cancel the tour," said Kevin Gushue, the city's tourism manager.

"Personally I'm disappointed, because I like seeing some of those guys that come over with the tour company. You know, they come over, they have a great time, they spend a lot of money," he told CBC News.
