Obama gives his acceptance speech at Invesco Field at the Democratic Convention (plus Norwegian) / Obama på talerstolen nå

Friday, August 29, 2008

Here's the article on nrk.no that is covering the acceptance speech, and since most of it is quotes from the speech it'll be interesting to contrast that with the original text to see how one gives a rousing speech in Norwegian. In some alternate universe maybe this is the language Barack Obama gave the speech in.

The article continues to update so it might be much longer in the next minutes or hours, but we'll go with the present version.

Obama på talerstolen nå
Obama on the podium now

Barack Obama accepted tonight the nomination as presidential candidate in a historical day.
På dagen 45 år etter den berømte talen "I Have a Dream" - tok Barack Obama USA ett steg nærmere drømmen til den avdøde borgerrettsforkjemperen Martin Luther King jr.
On the day 45 years after the famous speech "I Have a Dream" - Barack Obama took the United States one step closer to the dream of the deceased civil liberties fighter Martin Luther King jr.
- I accept the nomination, said Barack Obama to a historic jubilation among the close to 80,000 people that were pressed in to the Invesco Field in Denver.
Han entret scenen til tonene fra Bruce Springsteens "Born in the USA", som Springsteen i sin tid nektet Ronald Reagan å bruke.
He entered the scene to the notes from Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA", which Springsteen refused in his time to let Ronald Reagan use.
- On this great day I want to thank my opponents, especially the one that held out longest and fought hardest, and who has been such a great inspiration for so many, said Obama and gave his thanks to Hillary Rodham Clinton.
- And to Bill Clinton - that yesterday presented change in such a way that only he can, complimented Obama - as thanks that ex-president Clinton yesterday finally buried the hatchet and stood completely behind Obama.
Four years ago, I stood before you and told you my story - with a father from Kenya and a mother from Kansas.
- We can all be what we want, but now we need to come together, to take care of our common heritage, so that others can have that same American dream.

Lik Bush
Like Bush
- We love this country too much to let the next four years look like the last eight, said Obama.
- Next week we can hear how independent John McCain has been. But 90 percent of the time he has voted for the proposals of president Georgia W. Bush. That is not the change we need now when he thinks Bush is right 90 percent of the time.
- I don't know about you, but I'm not ready to take a ten percent chance on change.
- Clinton's period as president shows that it is possible to achieve, said Obama to full jubilation.
Before the speech was held in the evening he was given advice to bring town his fantastic rhetoric, reduce the hope and change - and present his politics - in order to reach skeptical voters that have not fully taken to him.
He heard the advice, and went in turn and order through values, ideology, economy, arms control, children's human development and rights, health care issues, rights for homosexuals, abortion, foreign affairs and security politics - and challenged McCain to a tough discussion on who was ready to be "Commander in Chief".
He also went straight to the attack on the McCain campaign's presentation of him as a political world celebrity, smooth, clever - but without political substance and experience.
Before Obama spoke, his childhood and youth were presented on video, a "half-coloured child" from simple conditions.
- I don't know what life John McCain thinks celebrities have, but that has been and is my life. Michille and I are able to be here, just because we've been given the opportunity for education.
