Airplane tickets in Turkmenistan to cost up to $20 now (no, that's not missing a digit)

Here's the source for today's article. I translated an article on Turkmenistan from BBC Turkish from 2007 here a while before which mentioned the airplane tickets that cost less than a dollar but it looks like I'll never get to experience that, more's the pity. Actually apparently non-citizens have to pay more anyway; so said the BBC article.

In Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, city buses and trolley buses have increased in price by 2000 percent.

Serbest piyasa ekonomisine geçmeye çalışan Türkmenistan'ın başkentinde belediye otobüsleri bugüne kadar bedava denilebilecek rakama yolcu taşıyordu. With the new rates a 5000 manat monthly ticket from before now costs 40,000 manat. Also, the fee for a monthly ticket for students is 10,000 manat (about 70 cents), and for pensioners 5000 manat (30 cents). After the new rates come in war veterans and the handicapped with be able to benefit from riding all transportation for free.

In the past few months the US dollar has lost 45% of its value against the Turkmen Manat, deteriorating from 24,000 manat to 14,000 manat per dollar.

The municipality of Ashgabat with its extremely modern bus fleet has bought 320 new buses over just the past year with the instructions of the new president Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedow. The rationale behind the increase is that a rate as insignificant as 50 manat was not enough to provide better service under today's conditions.
