Koreans now hold fewer than 100 million credit cards

Monday, March 10, 2014

A few months ago in Korea the credit card information of half the country was leaked, and the fallout is beginning to be seen in concrete numbers.

For the first time in 6 years, the number of credit cards in Korea has fallen below 100 million. According to numbers from last month, the number of cards from major credit card companies (Kookmin, Shinhan, etc.) was 99 million. This is the first time since 2008 that it has been below 100 million - back then there were 96 million cards.

In addition, the number of credit cards per 'economically active' person is now 3.9, the first time since 2007 that it has gone below four. In 2007 the average person had 3.7 credit cards.
