Would Korean smokers quit if prices were raised to 10,000 won?

Saturday, October 19, 2013

That's the question asked by Gallup Korea last month to Korean smokers. Right now tobacco prices are about 2500 to 3000 won a pack ($2.5 - $3), while 10,000 won is almost $10.

"What would you do if tobacco prices were raised to 10,000 won a pack?"

54% - I would quit
33% - I would still smoke
14% - Not sure / refused to answer

Other data from the survey: 52% of those surveyed (now not just smokers) approved of raising prices by 2000 won, 39% were opposed. 88% were in favour of banning smoking in large bars and restaurants, 10% were opposed.

43% of Korean males smoked, 4% of females, for 23% in total. Smokers smoked on average 18 cigarettes a day.
