How close is the International Space Station to Earth?

Sunday, October 13, 2013

The answer to that is 330 to 430 km. But in order to truly feel what this answer means, now there is a video you can view to understand how close that is compared to something like the moon. The video shows the moon as seen at the distance of the ISS. Such a distance is naturally impossible - the moon is moving further away, and if it were to be that close we would see massive daily tsunamis, the moon itself would break up into a ring, pieces of which would fall through the atmosphere and cause catastrophic damage, etc. etc. The moon at that distance would be quite the show for the few hours or days we would manage to stay alive if it were to suddenly end up orbiting at this distance.
