17 hours left to closest approach of asteroid 153958 (2002 AM31)

Sunday, July 22, 2012

Tomorrow we have a somewhat entertaining event with Slooh and others keeping a close eye on the closest approach of asteroid 153958 (2002 AM31) of the Earth - a perfectly safe distance of 5 million km (over ten times the distance to the moon), but the asteroid is a fairly hefty kilometre or so in diameter and this will be the closest by far it has been to us since it was discovered ten years ago.

So yeah, free flyby.

This asteroid doesn't even seem to have a page on the English Wikipedia, so we'll see in a few days whether one ends up created as a result.
