Referendum on Russian as official language in Latvia to take place 18 February

Wednesday, January 04, 2012

This news just came in today and I noticed it here first in French:

A national referendum on granting the status of a second official language to Russian in Latvia will take place on 18 February, announced Tuesday the country's Central Electoral Commission.

More than half of the electorate (the number that voted in the last legislative elections), at least 771,893 people, must approve this idea for it to be validated.

According to Latvian legislation, the referendum is to take place despite the rejection in parliament on 22 December of the bill to make Russian official.

Don't forget to vote in the poll on the right about this issue. I've extended it a few times as I want to see it hit at least 300 votes.
