Proposal for closure of the Samogitian Wikipedia ignites a ton of discussion

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Right at the end of May a proposal was made here to close the Samogitian Wikipedia, which can be seen here. Samogitian is a dialect of Lithuanian, or a language depending on who you ask. And for some background on that subject, just see the discussion on the request for closure. The most interesting part of it (for me) was this:

There is no limits as first science book in Lithuania was written in Samogitian, not in Lithuanian. [21] Zordsdavini 12:15, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
This subject is not my forté though so I'll avoid expressing an opinion on language vs. dialect, but I certainly don't agree with the idea to close the Wikipedia as even a Wikipedia in a dialect is worth keeping if users are willing to contribute to it, and it can always provide a valuable resource for linguists.

This post is post-dated as I may be on a plane right now, but at the time of writing (the 16th) the discussion was still open.
