Where are the best sites to read and use Lithuanian?

Saturday, March 13, 2010

I'm looking for some sites in Lithuanian that aren't necessarily directed at students but are good daily sites to visit in order to interact with the language as much as possible. The only sites I really know in Lithuanian are Lrytas.lt and another seemingly much smaller one called Zebra.lt. Any site with constantly updated information, nothing too chatty and colloquial, and easy user registration would probably be good. Ideal would be something similar to Euronews where not only are there videos to watch but they also happen to match up more or less with the text.

The biggest Lithuanian news site that nearly everybody reads is delfi.lt

It has open anonymous comments so it is kinda infamous for its youtube-like commenting. There is also delfi.lv as the Latvian delfi and delfi.ee as the Estonian version of the same site (which, I heard, are very popular as well). There's also alfa.lt which had a lot of advertisement and tried to become the popular news site but it seems to me like they aren't doing too well.

A Lithuanian radio station called "Žinių Radijas" which translates to "The News Radio" archives their programmes as podcasts. which is pretty handy. You can check them out at ziniur.lt and for example you could try this programme called Radijo Enciklopedija at http://www.ziniur.lt/programa/archyvas?pg=1&cat=61&item=652 which is lots of 2-3 minute pieces of information about different topics, such as people and famous events, which were aired on radio nearly everyday for some years. It is kind of useful since you can download the mp3.

Thanks as always. Maybe I'll sign up for alfa.lt and give them a modicum of support since they need it more.
