WISE discovers first comet

Saturday, February 13, 2010

In addition to its first asteroid that it discovered straight away, WISE has now discovered its first comet.

The particulars of this comet show just how valuable an instrument WISE is: this comet is more than 2 km in diameter and has a fairly close orbit from 1.6 AU (about the same as Mars' orbit) to 4 AU (a bit closer than Jupiter), but has remained undiscovered until yesterday.

Of course, what I'm really looking forward to is the potential discovery of a brown dwarf near our solar system.
