Two super-Earths discovered around sunlike stars 61 Virginis and HD 1461

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

Read about it here and here. These new planets discovered are still in the super-Earth range with the least massive still 5 times that of the Earth (the least massive planet we've discovered so far has a mass just 1.9 times ours) so no new records here, but the stars these planets orbit are extremely similar to our own, and are also relatively close to us, at 28 and 76 light-years away. 61 Virginis has a Wikipedia page here, but HD 1461 is still lacking one. Its planet does have its own page, however.

Edit: in case you're wondering where 61 Virginis is located in the sky, here it is. Find Spica and you're halfway there.
