Syria's official news agency SANA begins giving the news in Turkish as well

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

The news comes from here in Turkish. Until now SANA was available in Arabic, Spanish, English and French, so Turkish is now the fifth language that the site is available in. You can see the site in English here, and in Turkish here. A quick rundown of the Turkish page shows a menu on the left with news, environment, economy, culture, featured articles, sports, tourism, archeological discoveries, and medicine and health. There is also a fairly prominent section with photographs of Syria, along with exchange rates and so on, so this seems to be fairly oriented towards tourism as well as news.

The article speculates that this has a lot to do with improving Turkish-Syrian relations. Note also that Syria also has its own Turkmen minority, and Turkey is always concerned about Turkish minorities in other countries.
