Lithuanian proverb in Sanskrit and Latin

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Found this on the Lithuanian Wikipedia. Thanks to two comments below we can see it in Sambahsa and Persian as well:

Lithuanian: Dievas davė dantis, Dievas duos duonos.

Sanskrit: Devas adadat datas, Devas dasyati dhanas.

English: God gave teeth, God will give bread.

Latin: Deus dedit dentes (arch. dentis); Deus dabit panem.

Sambahsa: Divos dahsit dents, Divos dahsiet dvan.

Persian: هر آن کس که دندان دهد نان دهد (Har ân kas ke dandân dahad nân dahad)

We have such a proverb in Persian. Sa'di (1184 – 1283/1291?) says :

هر آن کس که دندان دهد نان دهد
