How much work do Koreans put into studying foreign languages?

Boring! Lots of people in Korea stop studying languages because of this type of atmosphere.

I happened upon an article in Korean here (from mid-January) summarizing a survey on this subject that I'll also summarize most of:

  • Survey was on 1419 people aged 18 to 53 about competitiveness people need to overcome the bad economic situation
  • 53.7% of them said that linguistic ability was the best way to overcome this, followed by certifications (21.1%), knowing people or networking (13.9%), and worldly wisdom (11.4%)
  • Of the languages they chose to increase their "value", 74.7% went with English, 11.4% with Chinese, 9.6% Japanese, and French/German/Spanish/other European languages came in at 4.3%.
  • 76.9% studied under 5 hours a week, 17.6% studied 5 to 10 hours, 3% from 10 to 15 hours, and 2.5% over 15 hours a week.
  • Things that interfered with their language studies were losing interest after failing to improve themselves soon enough (32.1%), always missing classes due to company and other meetings (23.5%), feeling bored from cramming-type classes (22.9%), and the pressure of always having to be in class at the same time (21.5%).

Indeed craming-type classes are the worst method ever to learn a language! (Or to learn anything!)
