The flag of Norland (the other name for Canada)

Friday, February 06, 2009

There's a thread on Reddit today about some of the other names proposed for Canada at its founding. Here they are:

  • Albion
  • Albionoria—"Albion of the north"
  • Borealia – from 'borealis', the Latin word for 'northern'; compare with Australia
  • Cabotia – in honour of Italian explorer John Cabot, who explored the eastern coast of Canada for England
  • Colonia
  • Efisga—an acronym of "English, French, Irish, Scottish, German, Aboriginal"
  • Hochelaga – an old name for Montreal
  • Laurentia
  • Mesopelagia—"land between the seas"
  • Norland
  • Superior
  • Tuponia—derived from 'The United Provinces of North America'
  • Transatlantica
  • Ursalia—"place of bears"
  • Vesperia—"land of the evening star"
  • Victorialand – in honour of Queen Victoria
Here's what I think of them:

Meh - Albion, Albionoria, Cabotia, Laurentia, Tuponia, Ursalia, Victorialand
Weird - Colonia, Efisga
Interesting but no - Hochelaga, Mesopelagia, Transatlantica
Interesting, could be good - Borealia, Norland, Superior, Vesperia

Norland seems to be a favourite, along with Vesperia. In honour of Norland I've created a sample flag:

Vive Norland...libre!
