Reaction of undecided voters to the Joe Biden - Sarah Palin vice presidential debate

Friday, October 03, 2008

The debate's over and we have some stats already on the reactions from undecided voters:

In the first one Biden wins among undecideds by 51% to 36%, 64% thought Biden did better than expected and an incredible 84% thought Palin did better than expected. What they were expecting of course was something in line with the Katie Couric interviews, so it's no surprise that she was able to achieve something better than that. And the last question about whether she is qualified to serve as president or not is pretty much the same.

The second one is more interesting, giving the debate 46% to Biden vs. 21% to Palin, but the second stat is more telling: 18% of undecided voters have now committed to Obama after the debate vs. 10% who have now committed to McCain. The first group were probably people that were still uneasy about how steady an Obama presidency would be and have now been reassured, and the latter is probably people who really like McCain personally and were ready to vote for him just as long as his running mate didn't turn out a train wreck of a performance at the debate. Not sure what is going to convince the remaining undecideds.

Palin did a good job of not looking like an idiot, despite not answering the questions asked of her. My impression of the event was sort of like this:

Q: What policies do you feel we should operate on concerning the occupation forces in Iraq?

Biden: McCain did it...[snip] (The basic theme of most of his answers was that McCain = more Bush and Obama will put the U.S. on a better track, which I agree with but which is not stating anything new) We're going to focus on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border (where Bin Laden is) and stop sinking cash into the mistake of a war in Iraq.

Palin: We need to fix Iraq, but we're going to win there. I'm a mother of a soldier. Coming from a small town, I feel I can connect better with the hearts and minds of families on Main Street, and I know what Main Street wants. We're going to change the way things are done. (She forgot the question was about Iraq?)

It's an answer which ultimately leaves me wondering...What policies does Palin feel we should operate on concerning the occupation forces in Iraq?

Palin's claim that Biden flip-flopped concerning the war in Iraq was an absurd point to make. What she was saying is that Biden is somehow in the wrong for changing his opinion concerning a mistaken move. She's saying that he should have remained stubborn and unwilling to change his initial opinion, which basically just shows her remarkable similarity to Bush.
