Sarkozy: Russia is withdrawing

Russia will withdraw its troops from uncontested Georgian regions in the course of a month, according to the French president Nicolas Sarkozy.
The Russians will simultaneously remove their checkpoints around the Georgian port city of Poti in the course of a week, explained Sarkozy after the meetings with his Russian colleague Dmitri Medvedev in Moscow Monday.
Sarkozy arrived in Moscow on Monday just to demand that Russia withdraw its soldiers to the positions they had before the breakout of war in August.
The French president demands that Moscow follow up the promise that the Russians gave one month ago, when they said they would withdraw their soldiers from Georgian territory. Certainly there have been unclarities on the contents of the agreement. Russia itself has believed the soldiers to be a "peacekeeping mission" and that the soldiers' presence is therefore legitimized.
At the same time that Sarkozy met Medvedev, Georgian authorities went out with a message that Russia in fact has strengthened its presence around Poti, and that Russian aircraft violated Georgian airspace on Monday. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which has observers in Georgia, could not confirm the information from the Georgian source.
(©NTB)
In the Haag hearings have started in the UN's international court, where Georgia has asked the UN court to investigate what they believe to be attacks against Georgians in the breakaway republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The hearings will take three days, but it may take months before the court decides whether they will proceed with the case.
