German Chancellor Angela Merkel: Georgia is welcome in NATO / Merkel: - Georgia velkommen i NATO

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Wikipedia as yet has only the most basic of information on relations between Georgia and Germany: "Georgian-German relations are foreign relations between Georgia and Germany. Germany recognized the independence of Georgia on March 22, 1992. Diplomatic relations between both countries were established on April 13, 1992. Georgia has an embassy in Berlin and Germany has an embassy in Tbilissi."

Here's a bit of news I noticed on aftenposten.no. Given its importance it's certainly in English in other newspapers too.

Merkel: - Georgia velkommen i NATO

Tysklands forbundskansler Angela Merkel sier at Georgia vil bli tatt opp som medlem av NATO
Germany's chancellor Angela Merkel says that Georgia will be taken in as a member of NATO
Merkel var søndag i Georgias hovedstad Tbilisi, der hun møtte president Mikhail Saakasjvili.
Merkel was in the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, on Sunday, where she met president Mikhail Saakashvili.
- Georgia kommer til å bli medlem av NATO dersom landet vil, og det vil det, sa Merkel på en felles pressekonferanse med Saakasjvili.
- Georgia will be a member of NATO if the country wants to, and it wants to, said Merkel in a joint press conference with Saakashvili.
Uttalelsen er en av de sterkeste støtteerklæringene for georgisk NATO-medlemskap etter at konflikten med Russland eskalerte.
The statement is one of the strongest statements of support for Georgian membership in NATO after the conflict with Russia escalated.
