Notes on Baku - part 1.1

Thursday, April 10, 2008

Notes on Baku (Bakü Notları) is a blog that I've read some three or four times in its entirety, a blog written by a Turkish guy that seems to have spent some amount of time there due to work. I don't know anything about him except that he has written a surprisingly detailed blog on the city, and so I'd like to bring some more attention to his blog while making the information more widely available. The first post to be translated is here, and it's from November 29, 2005.

See his blog for images of Azerbaijan as well; I won't be posting them here.

As always, I'll try my best but only guarantee 0% accuracy.

Azerbaijan, the "country of fire", is a country remembered through its association with fire since ancient history. Fire is related to the important resources of today, gas and petrol. Baku, where I lived for that time, is in a single sense a petrol city. The large and small oil wells that draw your attention while still descending in the plane can be encountered in quite wide areas around the city. Around the Absheron area where Baku is located there are a large number of large oil wells in the Caspian Sea.

From the first moment it's understood that the economy of Azerbaijan is connected in a single sense with petrol. Every part of the country has local and foreign oil companies, and consulting, legal and finance companies connected to them. The effects of the finishing of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline will within a short 3-5 years will bear Azerbaijan's oil production, and will increase the country's petrol revenue. Because of this, for Azerbaijan located in an area as heated as the Caucasus, it will rightly be able to at times be the focus of the entire world.

Baku is the largest city in Azerbaijan. As a first impression you're able to understand that you've come to an area affected by history and nature. The city is next to the Caspian Sea, and therefore has a dominant marine climate. Next to the ancient Turk civilization the architecture from Tsarist Russia and the Communist period grabs the attention. During that time there is no definite information on the city's population. More than just citizens of Azerbaijan who "fled" Armenia, it seems as if all the cities and towns flow into Baku.

The population of Azerbaijan is about 8 million, and it's said that of this at least 40%, or even half of themmlive in Baku. According to official statistics from 2003 the population of Baku is about 2 million. Regarding this, an Azeri professor of economics we recently talked to quoted an interesting anecdote. Seemingly half sad about it as he sighed, he told us that "If it were communist times I could tell you people the population straight away, because it was clearly known from the figures in the amount of bread given to the populace." In Baku which has moved quickly towards capitalism since 1991 there can easily be seen the changes and the pains that come with this.
